Curtis - Mustang Award Recipient

Congratulations to Curtis H. our 8th grade student, and recipient of the St. Rita of Cascia High School Mustang Award. Curtis is one of the outstanding students of our school. He is one of the Principal's List Students in his class. He has a high sense of responsibility and has in many occasions demonstrated a strong strength of character, creativity and initiative, in his academics and extracurricular. Little wonder he is being honored with this historic Mustang Award.

The Mustang Award Program originated in 1983 to recognize young men of exceptional caliber with great potential for the future. St. Rita of Cascia High School presents this Mustang Award to honor those whose lives reflect the core values of love, unity and truth. The award is also in recognition of pursuit of excellence in academics, athletics, and school activities of the recipients as well as their commitment to spirituality.

Lend A Shoulder Day

It was once again the Big Shoulders "Lend a Shoulder Day." Thursday, November 3, was the big day. As early as 8.00 am, some members of the Big Shoulder started arriving at the school for this fun-like and exciting annual event. This year's event marked the 12th anniversary of the "Lend a Shoulder Day". Here at St. Ethelreda, the event was well observed. The students and staff warmly welcomed their guests with a heart-warming song, "Grateful".

The Big Shoulders' members engaged in different activities with the students to mark the event. These activities include; reading, using an interative whiteboard and computers, creating a science and art projects, book fair visitation, etc. It was an exciting and fascinating experience for all!

The mission of the Big Shoulders Fund is to provide support to the Catholic schools in the neediest areas of inner city Chicago. They have offered scholarships to many students, donated instructional equipment and materials to needy schools, and also engaged in the schools' facility improvement.

Yes! we are grateful to the Big Shoulders' Fund for continuously carrying some of our disadvantaged students' financial burden on their 'big shoulders'.

Office Max - Make A Difference

Office Max in collaboration with the Coleman Group, made "A Day Made Better" program come alive at St. Ethelreda School.

At about 9:00 am on October 24, 2011, some representatives of Office Max and the Coleman Group stunned the school with a huge box filled with essential school supplies. They donated this box to our 8th grade teacher, Mrs. L. Pass, in recognition of her dedication, innovation and passion at St. Ethelreda School.

Although it is a well known fact that St. Ethelreda is blessed with dedicated, innovative and passionate principal and teachers, the program recognizes one teacher at a time in a particular school.

Teachers, we know, spend much of their own money on classroom supplies; not because they have the money, but because they love and care for their students and they always want the best for them.

In an effort to assist the teachers in cutting down the cost of classroom supplies, or rather, in order to lessen the burden for teachers in needy schools, the 'A Day Made Better" program was born.

Our thanks go to all teachers for choosing to make a difference in the lives of their students. We also gratefully thank Office Max and the Coleman Group for "Making a Day Better" for the teachers.

New School Year...New Math, Science and Technology Focus

Have you heard the exciting news? St. Ethelreda School is growing a Math, Science and Technology Focus with a Benedictine University Partnership...as proclaimed on the school sign in June 2011.

Even though the announcement is new, St. Ethelreda School has been well on its way into becoming an official Math, Science and Technology (MST)School for the past six years.

Leading the charge is Dr. MeShelda Jackson, who as Director of the St. Ethelreda School Partnership Project has been instrumental in integrating St. Ethelreda’s math, science and technology curriculum to meet national standards since the partnership began. She’s also a Benedictine University Associate Professor and Department Chair for the College of Education and Health Services/School of Education.

A unique academic highlight is Problem-Based Learning (PBL), a real world math and science research-based teaching technique co-developed by Dr. James Pelech, a Benedictine University Assistant Professor of Education. Problem-Based Learning is featured in his co-authored book The Comprehensive Handbook of Constructivist Theory: From Theory to Practice.

Dr. Pelech has used PBL over the years to co-teach math and science along with St. Ethelreda middle school teachers and Dr. Ovid Wong, Benedictine University Associate Professor of Science Education. His teaching experience at St. Ethelreda School is also mentioned in the book. The students have really enjoyed learning math and science through PBL taught by actual college professors in the classroom.

Not only is St. Ethelreda School educating students with TLC (Tender Learning Care), it's preparing them to become future MST leaders with a cutting-edge math, science and technology-focused education taught in a warm, loving and Christian environment.

Hooray for Noadiyah Day!

It was a day made for St. Ethelreda royalty! Principal Spells officially declared August 24th as Noadiyah Day in honor of Noadiyah J., the 1st place winner of the 2011 Bud Billiken Essay Competition. She may not have become Bud Billiken Queen but she was queen for a day at St. Ethelreda School, which happens to be named after an English queen.

After Wednesday’s mass, the first of the year, Noadiyah was presented with the first ever St. Ethelreda Medal of High Achievement. Principal Spells proudly adorned her with the medal and then Noadiyah recited her winning essay to the student body…by heart!

Noadiyah, we are so very proud of you! Thanks for representing St. Ethelreda School so well on the Royal Court float in this year’s Bud Billiken Parade!

First Day Fiesta!

St. Ethelreda School was in a festive mood as the first day of school officially arrived on August 22nd! Students, parents, faculty and staff gathered in a big circle in front of the school and received the traditional welcome into the St. Ethelreda “village” by Principal Spells.

After prayers and introductions, the party kicked off with African drumming by students who learned the art during summer camp. Party horn sounds, bubbles and excitement were in the air as new and returning students along with their parents and teachers took the traditional walk as VIPs on the red carpet through the school doors.

Looks like the new school year is off to a faithful, festive and fantastic start!

Noadiyah Wins 1st Place in Bud Billiken Essay Competition!

Congratulations to Noadiyah J., who took the top prize in the essay competition of the Bud Billiken King and Queen Contest.

Even though Noadiyah didn't become Bud Billiken Queen, she reigned supreme as the 1st place winner for her essay on growing vegetables. Noadiyah was presented her award at the King and Queen Coronation ceremony on August 7th at the Museum of Science and Industry in front of her proud family and Principal Spells.

This Saturday, Noadiyah will represent St. Ethelreda School on the Royal Court float in the 2011 Bud Billiken Parade. You can watch the parade on WLS-TV Channel 7 or WGN Channel 9 starting at 10:00 am.

Vote Noadiyah This Year's Bud Billiken Queen!

Our very own third grader Noadiyah J. is a running for Bud Billiken Queen! This would be quite an honor for this star student who made the 2nd grade honor roll several times this year...and won the 2nd grade spelling bee! Becoming Queen of the historic Bud Billiken Parade would be the crowning moment of a stellar school year!

We need our St. Ethelreda Family to help Noadiyah claim her crown! You can vote for Noadiyah by submitting a vote coupon with a donation by this Friday, July 15th. See the flyer and vote coupon below for details. With your help, Noadiyah could achieve her dream!

Noadiyah has been a standout in the Bud Billiken King and Queen Contest as she wowed the judges and her proud parents with a memorized essay about how to grow vegetables that was inspired by her grandmother who taught her how to plant a garden. She was also inspired by her older sister's science fair project about healthy eating. This year's essay competition theme was energy sources.

We wish Noadiyah the best of luck and hope to see her represent St. Ethelreda School as this year's Queen of the Royal Court!

Jose's on His Way to LA!

Our IT guy extraordinare Jose will be starring in a new role--in sunny Los Angeles! Jose is leaving Chicago to pursue his career in LA after his recent graduation from Purdue University this year. He's excited about the move, especially since he has family in California. Although we're happy for Jose, he'll certainly be missed by all of us at St. Ethelreda.

We wish Jose the best of luck and God's blessings. And we hope when Jose becomes the next Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook movie fame that he won't forget he made his "big break" at a little ole school called St. Ethelreda.

Congratulations Dejaniria...An Academic Shining Star and Scholarship Winner!

Eighth grader Dejaniria F. was presented the Mother McAuley 2011 Principal Scholarship by McAuley Director of Admissions Kathyrn Klyczek after mass in front of the entire school...and her proud mom!

Dejaniria was one of six incoming McAuley freshmen awarded the scholarship and the first St. Ethelreda student ever to receive it after several annual submissions from many of our well-qualified eight graders. She wrote a winning essay about being a leader and the school activities she participates in including leadership and student council.

In January, Dejaniria also attended the weeklong Young Leaders of America conference in Washington D.C. that she paid for herself. Along with glowing recommendations from Principal Spells and the First Lady of her church, she was chosen as a well-deserved recipient.

We wish Dejaniria the best at Mother McAuley and look forward to her continued success as one of St. Ethelreda's brightest leaders of today...and tomorrow.

Preschool Project

The preschool at St. Ethelreda is a fun, dynamic place. Ms. Clair and Ms. Seaton devised a fun project for the students: building a worm habitat.

The habitat started with a plastic carton. In the carton, compost was created using sand, paper, dirt, grass, leaves, vegetables and more. Once the habitat was prepared, a few worms from the bait shop were added and the preschool worm farm was ready to go!

Here's a picture of some preschoolers looking at and touching one of the worms from the habitat.

Most of the preschoolers were very happy and excited with the worm habitat that they built. Though actually touching the worms was a more difficult issue for some:

The worm habitat was a wonderful, successful project that the preschool kids really enjoyed. Thank you to Ms. Clair and Ms. Seaton for sharing!

Farewell Father Thadeo!

St. Ethelreda students and faculty paid tribute to Father Thadeo after a beautiful May Crowning mass on Wednesday, May 12th. Father Thadeo celebrated mass for the last time at St. Ethelreda prior to assuming a new position in the Archdiocese.

Students gave him heartfelt thank you banners, flowers and hugs, and he also received a St. Ethelreda t-shirt which was presented to him by Principal Spells.

Before starting his new job, Father Thadeo will be leaving to visit his family in his native Tanzania. Although Father Thadeo was only with us for a short time, he'll always be a special part of the St. Ethelreda family.

Thank you Father Thadeo…we love you and miss you already!

Happy Grandparents Day!

It was a day of song and celebration for the beloved grandparents of St. Ethelreda students on May 20th. From a rousing country western line dance to a soulful serenade of “My Grandparents” to the tune of the Temptations' hit My Girl, the grandparents were treated to several loving tributes from their grandchildren.

After enjoying the rousing entertainment and spending quality time with their grandchildren, the grandparents were treated to a nice lunch and even nicer memories of a very special day planned in their honor.

As St. Ethelreda congratulates Sr. Caroline on her one year anniversary since she joined the school's staff, she has this to say:

My Journey So Far at St. Ethelreda

As I read through the congratulatory and thank you cards, tears of joy rolled down my cheeks.

It all started Wednesday morning, the 4th of April, 2011. After Mass I went back to the office to continue with my day's work when the Principal, Mrs. Denise Spells, sent for me and I went to meet her at the Harold Washington Hall.

As I opened the door, I saw all the teachers and the students standing, smiling, and waving their hands to the rhythm of the song they were singing "For she's a Jolly Good Se-cre-tary. . ." I opened my eyes and mouth in amazement as the Principal and everyone shouted, "Congratulations on your one year anniversary as the School Secretary!" and "Thank you Sr. Caroline for the work you are doing for us"!

Every class, accompanied by their teacher, presented me with a congratulatory and thank you presents, expressing their joy and happiness. This awesome surprise and experience left me speechless!

Working at St. Ethelreda School is like working in a family business or company. The Principal, Mrs. Denise Spells, is a super-hero-mother to the students and a humane CEO to the employees. The teaching staff are wonderful teachers, teaching and caring for the students as theirs, the non-teaching staff are like computer chips that are invisible but carry out indispensable jobs in the background.

The students are like little flowers planted in ones home garden that blossom every morning, glittering with their different colors and giving joy to the heart. St. Ethelreda School is called the "Family School" and that undoubtedly is what it is.

I thank God who has brought me here to be part of this wonderful family. I thank the Principal and the staff for their encouragement and support. I thank the students for challenging me with their simplicity and innocence.
I thank everyone for your sincere love and graciousness. Let us with God's grace and strength continue to work together to help our little ones, the students, to lay strong foundations for reaching their full potentials.

Superkids Reading Program Launched at St. Ethelreda School

In December of 2010, St. Ethelreda School hosted a Superkids teacher in-service as part of the Archdiocese of Chicago's Super School Initiative in partnership with Rowland Reading Foundation, the developer of the highly effective and proven Superkids program. Informal Assessment through the Daily Routine and Its Impact on Instruction was conducted by instructor Pam Peroutky for St. Ethelreda and seven other schools.

The main focus was the implementation of the Superkids Reading Program into the teachers’ daily routine. It shows them “how to do things differently” in respect to teaching reading according to Peroutky. St. Ethelreda's kindergarten through 2nd grade teachers incorporated Superkids into their curriculum at the beginning of the school year.

“I like the way phonics, reading and vocabulary are incorporated into literacy education throughout the program for younger children,” said St. Ethelreda Principal Denise Spells.

The Superkids Reading Program is an engaging and motivating phonics-based reading and language arts program for Pre-K through 2nd grade students. Young readers learn the fundamentals of reading through the whimsical world of Superkids characters. Teaching phonics and language arts within this innovative framework make learning to read fun and exciting.

Superintendent Sister Mary Paul McCaughey is leading the charge to turn Catholic schools into Super Schools. In conjunction with Rowland Reading Foundation’s mission of “teaching young children to read and write,” the Super School initiative will help position Catholic schools as premier centers of primary reading education.

Preparing primary students through the Superkids Reading Program shows how much St. Ethelreda School and the Archdiocese of Chicago care about their students’ future by giving them a solid foundation critical for literacy and leadership success.

Dr. Seuss Day Was A-OKAY!

The magical world of Dr. Seuss’ beloved classics came to life as students and teachers celebrated National Dr. Seuss Day on March 15th. Ms. Briana Holland led the charge to bring Dr. Seuss Day to St. Ethelreda for the first time.

From dressing up to reading stories to playing Green Eggs and Ham Tic-Tac-Toe, St. Ethelreda School was transformed into a page right out of a Dr. Seuss book:

Preschool
Mrs. Clair whipped up some delicious green eggs and ham for the four-year-olds…and they liked them!

Kindergarten
Thing 1 and Cat in the Hat, also known as Mrs. Griffin and Mrs. Boatman, kept the kindergarteners busy with many fun projects including a Grinch “Do Not Disturb” style sign and Green Eggs and Ham activity book.

First Grade
First graders adorned in Cat in the Hat hats listened intently while Ms. Holland read them Yertle the Turtle.

Second Grade
Sister Sheena and Mrs. Davis' second grade class made their own whimsical hats and read I Can Read With My Eyes Shut.

This year's Dr. Seuss Day was loads of fun for everyone!

Catholic Schools Week: Better Late Than Never!

This year’s Catholic Schools Week got off to great start but was cut short due to the blizzard of 2011. The celebration resumed a week later and fun was had by all!

The festivities began with a Bring Your Parent to School contest which gave the class with the most visitors a pizza party. Sixth grader Christopher’s mom Monica was one of our first visitors. Antiquetta, an alumna from the Class of 2005 who’s studying to become an elementary school teacher also liked observing her cousin's Jada's class and reflecting on her days as a St. Ethelreda student.

Some of the activities included Share a Day with Your Student, Spirit Day, “Are You Smarter Than Your First – Eighth Grader?” and more:

Bible Stories: First Grade
First graders chose a Bible story, memorized it and recited it to the entire class…and 16 visitors! The class also won the Bring Your Parent to School contest.

Story Time / Flash Card Game: Second Grade
Class of 2002 alum Danysha visited her cousin Shaun and read to his class and played a brainstorm game. “I really enjoyed it,” she said afterwards.

50 States in Rhyme Sing-a-Long / Sparkle Game: Third Grade Map Making Exercise: Fourth Grade
Mom Teyonye did double duty in two of daughter Heavyn’s classes. She also visited son Trayonne’s seventh grade room.

Are You Smarter Than Your Fifth Grader? / Penny for Your Thoughts: Fifth Grade
Fifth grader Danny’s Aunt Kimberly who’s also an alumna from the Class of 1980 took on the “Are You Smarter Than Your Fifth Grader?” challenge…and won!

St. Ethelreda Students’ Works Published in Binkabi Anti-Violence Book

Twenty-two St. Ethelreda students who spent their summer participating in a creative workshop can now add "poet" to their names. The four week workshop prepared students from St. Ethelreda and two other faith-based schools to write poems on the topic of violence from their point of view by examining the prevalence of violence in the community, acting out skits and reciting violence-themed works of other writers.

The poems were published in a book called Binkabi which derived its name from an Andrika symbol from Ghana's Akan language that symbolizes peace and harmony. Binkabi’s core message is about stopping violence and is expressed within the context of the students’ faith-based education and values.

Management Planning Institute (MPI), a multi-service agency for adults and youth headed by President Dr. George Smith sponsored the workshop that was part of its Fine Arts Summer Program which also included two other workshops in Tap Dancing and African Drumming. The workshop was taught by creative writing instructor Useni Eugene Perkins who led the students in an anti-violence pledge and the recital of his poem Rise Black Youth before each workshop.

The students were recently presented their copies of the book on Spirit Day during the Catholic Schools Week celebration.

St. Ethelreda Cheerleaders Win Big in Competition!

Our cheerleaders are on a winning streak! They’ve been crowned National Champions, 6th Grade and Under Elementary in the Super Nationals of the Champion Spirit Group competition held on March 12th and 13th.

Not only that -- they recently won 1st Place, Pee Wee Division at the St. Rita Cheer Fest 2011 in February and 2nd Place, Pee Wee Division at the St. Columbanus Cheer It On 2011 competition in January.

Kindergarten Marks 100th Day of School

Our kindergarten students reached a big milestone on February 8, 2011…the 100th day of school! Mrs. Griffin and Mrs. Boatman commemorated the occasion with a 100th themed celebration. Each student received a 100 day certificate and a birthday-style hat. Students also filled out a 100 number chart with Cheerios and made a wacky 100 wish.

The year started with the children tracking the days on a 100 wall chart which also taught them how to count to 100. All of the 100 day activities were compiled into a book that each student received as a keepsake of their special day.

St. Ethelreda School will be open Monday Feb 7, 2011.

From Principal Spells:

School will resume on Monday, February 7! Morning and After Care will be open. Extracurricular activities will take place. We are extending "Bring A Parent to School" throughout next week. Parents, you are invited to attend class with your child and follow the classroom lessons any time between 9:00 and 2:00 Wednesday through Friday.

We are eagerly looking forward to seeing all of you back in the classrooms learning!

PS - Come out and watch our Eagles Cheer Squad at 12:00 at St. Rita High School, 77th and Western, as they compete against other top cheer squads from the city and the suburbs. Go Eagles!

A message from Principal Spells:

"Some of the teachers are still snowed in and Paulina Street has not been plowed. My snow plow person for the school could not get down the street. The school closing is posted on the Emergency Closing Center website and I sent a phone blast to the parents, faculty and staff."

St. Ethelreda hosts Teachers' Professional Development (TeachScape)

Professional development in general is a process whereby one continually progresses and refines ones skills, method, and approaches in ones given profesion for a positive outcome. Teachers' Professional Development therefore, is a process whereby teachers redefine and restructure their methods, skills, approaches and teaching strategies for effective impact on their students' performance and achievement.

On October 8, 2010, all roads led to St. Ethelreda School for this all important activity. Teachers and Principals from St. John De La Salle, St. Margaret of Scotland and St. Sabina, gathered at St. Ethelreda- the hosting school, for their October TeachScape with the theme 'Response to Intervention (RTI).

Response to Intervention, according to National Center on Response to Intervention," integrates assessment and intervention within a school-wide, multi-level prevention system to maximize student achievement and reduce behavior problems". The importance of Response to Intervention (RTI) includes;

a) School's identification of students at risk for poor learning outcomes

b) Monitoring of student's progress

c) Provision of evidence-based interventions

d) Adjustment of the intensity and nature of those interventions based on a student's responsiveness.

The program ended at about 3.00pm.

Thanks to the principal of St. Ethelreda who accepted hosting this month's TeachScape, to all the teachers that participated and all who contributed in making the whole exercise a success.

Q: We know you are a member of the Missionary Society of St. Paul, what is your country of origin?

A: Nigeria

Q: How would you describe St. Ethelreda School?

A: St. Ethelreda is a Catholic School established for the sole purpose of educating the whole person: body, mind and soul.

Q: Do you love working with Children?

A: Yes, because children are our future leaders and citizens. If we take time to educate them we will be educating not only future Christians but also future good citizens.

Q: What does it mean to have a childlike spirit?

A: Simplicity, honesty, forgiveness, caring, loving and trusthworthiness. These are elements that make up a childlike spirit. If these values are passed on to the students of St. Ethelreda, we would have achieved our goals in their formation.

Q: How would you encourage the students to develop their spiritual gifts?

A: Through the teaching of religious education, organizing religious programs, preparing the students for the required sacraments, etc., in the school. These would give them opportunity to develop their faith and spiritual gifts.

Q: What is your favorite story in the bible on Spiritual growth for children?

A: The story of the prodigal son is a good one. It teaches children to learn how to say 'I am sorry' when they disobey their parents, guardians or teachers. It makes them realize their mistakes and ask for forgiveness.

Q: What are your wishes for the school?

A: My wishes for the school is for it to live up to its standard of training and bringing up good citizens for the nation; teaching and inculcating the Catholic doctrine, upholding good education without discrimination, with care and loving kindness; and to help each child to reach his/her full potentials.

Interview with Mrs. Johnson

Q: Why did you become a librarian?

A: Why did I become a librarian? It's a complicated answer. The short and simple answer. It is a great career that involves working with books and children.

Q: What is your favorite book?

A: How can you ask a librarian about a favorite book? I have so many favorites. When it comes to children's books, I have to say any and all Newberry Award winners. Realistic fiction is my favorite genre. I better stop here or the list go on and on.

Q: What are some of of the things you'd like to improve at the St. Ethelreda library?

A: I would like to see more books in the library. Books that our students want to read, award winners, and popular/best sellers. Accelerated Reader would be a great program to have at St. Ethelreda. The students could improve their reading and enjoy reading at the same time.

Q: What are your favorite Pizza toppings?

A: I am a true Chicagoan and love pizza. I am not picky about toppings. I eat anything but anchovies on pizza.

Meet our new 5th grade teacher Mrs. Marijean Rex:

Where are you from?

I'm from Oak Lawn, IL. I started teaching the 5th grade at St. Gerald School there.

What school did you come from and what grade did you teach there?

I worked at St. Lawrence O'Toole in Matteson, IL as a 5th grade teacher last year. I started there mid-year and found out I loved teaching 5th graders. It's my niche. Previously, I taught middle schoolers in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

Why do you like teaching 5th graders?

I like the ages...and they're fun, social and want to learn. My class at St. Ethelreda is a nice group. They're wonderful.

How did you find out about St. Ethelreda?

Mrs. Leonard told me about it. I met her back when we attended the adult studies program at Trinity College.

How do you like St. Ethelreda so far?

I enjoy everything about it. I love the kids. The staff is friendly. Mrs. Leonard and Mr. Cooper have been very helpful. I feel welcome.

What are you looking forward to this year?

I'm looking forward to becoming a permanent part of this school. I like it here and I want to stay.
